Key points

  • CVE-2026-103413 allows improper input validation in Apache Camel Karavan deployments.
  • Authenticated users can apply resources with privileged access and host-level permissions.
  • Version 4.22.1 patches the issue for affected versions ranging from 4.0.0.

Apache Camel Karavan contains a high-severity vulnerability that enables authenticated users to apply arbitrary Kubernetes resources to a cluster. The flaw, identified as CVE-2026-103413 with a CVSS score of 8.8, stems from improper input validation during the deployment process. This issue affects versions from 4.0.0 up to, but not including, 4.22.1.

Root cause

The vulnerability arises when Karavan processes a project's `kubernetes.yaml` file during a deployment initiation. According to the official advisory posted by Andrea Cosentino on the oss-security mailing list, the tool unmarshals the file and applies every resource contained within it to the target cluster. Crucially, the application fails to restrict the types of resources allowed. It does not reject security-sensitive pod options, nor does it pin the target namespace for these operations. This lack of validation means the tool trusts the contents of the configuration file without verifying if the resources are safe or appropriate for the intended deployment scope.

Attack path

An authenticated user with any role can exploit this weakness to have Karavan apply Kubernetes resources within the reach of its service account. Because the tool does not filter resource kinds, an attacker can inject configurations that request dangerous permissions. These include pods with `hostNetwork`, `hostPID`, or `hostIPC` enabled.

Attackers can also specify `hostPath` volumes, host ports, and privileged containers. Furthermore, the vulnerability allows the specification of privilege escalation settings and added capabilities. This effectively grants the attacker the ability to execute code with elevated privileges on the underlying host nodes, potentially leading to full cluster compromise.

Affected versions

  • Apache Camel Karavan versions 4.0.0 through 4.22.0 are affected.
  • The issue is resolved in version 4.22.1.

Mitigation

  • Upgrade Apache Camel Karavan to version 4.22.1 immediately.
  • Audit recent deployments for unauthorized or unexpected Kubernetes resources.
  • Review service account permissions to ensure they follow the principle of least privilege.

What to do and how to stay safe: Apache Camel Karavan

  • Inventory all instances of Apache Camel Karavan in your environment to identify affected versions.
  • Monitor Kubernetes audit logs for unexpected resource creation or permission changes from the Karavan service account.
  • Restrict network access to the Karavan interface to authorized personnel only until patches are applied.
  • Once the vendor provides an update, verify the integrity of the download before applying the patch.
